ADCES has developed a 6-hour online certificate program on the topics of connected insulin delivery devices and the clinical application of data. The program targets diabetes care and education specialists and other members of the diabetes care team interested in learning more about these topics. Case studies highlight the importance of considering data when working with people who use multiple daily injections of insulin.

Learning Outcome

Learners will score at least 85% on the post-test to demonstrate the knowledge necessary to create person-centered treatment plans related to connected device data.

Modules

  • Introduction
  • Roadmap from Traditional Insulin Dosing Devices to Connected (Smart) Insulin Pens and Devices
    Data-Driven Case Studies
  • Building a Virtual Care Model with Remote Monitoring and Population Health
  • Hallmarks of a Data-Driven Practice Model

Learning Objectives

  • Develop discussion points for the person with diabetes using connected therapy based on data patterns.
Interpret connected device reports to make person-centered recommendations to therapy.
  • Create person-centered therapy plans based on connected device data in multiple types of clinical situations.
  • Describe virtual care models used for remote monitoring and population health.
  • Explain how to bill for virtual services.
  • Discuss different types of connected devices and platforms for virtual care, remote monitoring, and population health.
  • Demonstrate how diabetes care and education specialists can utilize these technologies in combination with pattern management and coaching to support the person with diabetes.
  • Establish correct insulin therapy settings when initiating connected devices.
  • Utilize data patterns to establish realistic meal schedules in partnership with persons with diabetes, in accordance with their normal routines.
  • Support persons with diabetes to integrate and synchronize connected devices.
  • Outline expectations for data collection and assessment by the healthcare team.
  • Discuss the strengths, limitations and challenges to people using them and their clinicians of traditional insulin delivery devices.
  • Describe the current and ongoing evolution (roadmap) from traditional insulin delivery devices to tracking and connected smart insulin pens that assist the PWD to overcome many challenges of taking insulin.
  • Describe how the increasingly sophisticated connected (smart) insulin pens allows the PWD and clinician to view integrated data more easily and progressively titrate insulin doses and other aspects of therapy to improve diabetes care.
  • Describe new treatments approved and in the pipeline for type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Compare and contrast new diabetes medications and technology to what was previously available.
  • Explain practical pearls of wisdom for educating and supporting the PWD with newer technology.
  • Describe clinical challenges among insulin pen users and clinicians’ ability to evaluate use.
  • Explain how use of smart dose monitors assist clinicians to improve adherence.
  • Demonstrate clinical utility of smart dose monitors for users and clinicians through case studies.
