Behavioral Health: An Important Foundation for Diabetes Care

May 22, 2023

By Nicole Bereolos, PhD, MPH, MSCP, CDCES, FADCES

ADCES23 is a great opportunity to network with like-minded people who all have a vested interest in advancing diabetes self-management. People travel from all over the country to hear about hot topics in the field. It is an opportunity to meet clinicians, authors, presenters, advocates, and researchers who you may have read about, exchanged emails with, or seen on social media.

The ADCES23 Behavioral Health Planning Committee is a multidisciplinary team comprised of a dietitian, social worker and psychologist. We reviewed numerous submissions to diversify the content presented during the conference. The passion of the presenters was clear, and we hope that this wealth of knowledge will be informative and practical.

Look forward to sessions on practical behavioral health tools, having healthier relationships with food, approaching diabetes-related distress, addressing mental health in those with vision loss, reducing provider burnout, and tackling financial literacy in young adults. New this year, Dr. Blanchette and colleagues will be discussing practice pearls associated with cystic fibrosis-related diabetes on Sunday! There will even be a unique, interactive session on Monday morning where attendees are asked to bring their behavioral health cases for discussion in an open forum with a behavioral health expert. And these are just a few of the new and exciting topics and activities in store during ADCES23!

Attending ADCES23 has been a valuable resource for me, especially since I am in private practice. Sitting in on sessions and starting conversations with other diabetes care and education specialists has allowed me to see what is working and not working in other settings. It gives me ideas on things to add or change in my practice to be more successful working with individuals in North Texas. It is a pleasure to have those conversations in-person and network with people that I will likely call on in the future.

I’ll see you in August at ADCES23 as we celebration the 50th Anniversary of ADCES! Register today.

Diabetes is a very dangerous disease. Therefore, we should not consume too many sweets, and avoid a passive lifestyle. Instead, we can hang out with friends, exercise, jog, play donkey kong, follow healthy diets.

Hey there! I just finished reading your article on the significance of behavioral health as the foundation for diabetes care, and I have to say, it was truly eye-opening. You brilliantly highlighted the often overlooked connection between mental well-being and diabetes management, emphasizing the crucial role of addressing behavioral aspects in diabetes care. Your insights into how stress, emotional health, and behavioral patterns impact blood sugar levels highlighted the importance of taking a holistic approach to effectively manage diabetes.By the way, I came across a fantastic resource that I think you and your readers would find interesting. It's an online therapy platform called Calmerry, which offers convenient and accessible mental health support through online counseling. If you're curious, here's the link: https://us.calmerry.com/online-therapy/ and it could be a valuable addition to diabetes care by providing personalized support for managing stress, anxiety, and other mental health factors that can impact diabetes management.
