Each year at the ADCES Annual Conference, we recognize excellence in diabetes care and education and honor members' service to the association and the larger diabetes community.

ADCES offers a variety of awards and scholarships to celebrate those individuals who have gone above and beyond. 

Allene Van Son Distinguished Service Award

This award recognizes outstanding volunteer and leadership contributions and service to the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists. This award is named in honor of Allene Van Son Martinez, ADCES’s first president and leader in diabetes care. Van Son Martinez was a lifetime advocate for those affected by diabetes and a champion for the Association. Van Son Martinez was the first recipient of the Allene Van Son Distinguished Service Award, named in her honor to recognize one diabetes care and education specialist each year for outstanding contributions and service to the Association.

Advancing the Vision Award

Recognizes a member whose program or project advances the ADCES Project Vision strategic pillars to achieve the outcomes inspired by ADCES’s mission.

Innovative Use of Technology Award

Supports the innovative use and integration of diabetes management and/or education software and/or technology practice. The project submitted should have significant impact on the assessment and provision of personalized prediabetes, diabetes and related cardiometabolic conditions and self-management interventions that enhance or improve practice for individuals or broad populations.

The proposed project must be completed within twelve months of funding to be eligible to present at the ADCES Annual Meeting and Exhibition the following year. The recipient will be required to submit an abstract for the 2023 Annual Conference.

    The project should be developed by the individual submitting the application; however, it can be a team project. Please describe your role on the team and provide information for other team members.

    The tool/program may not be developed by a commercial firm or national organization.

    The tool/program must be developed for use in practice of DSME and support. 


Diabetes Care and Education Specialist of the Year Award

Honors a diabetes care and education specialist who has made a special contribution to the field through dedication, innovation, and sensitivity in patient care. The Diabetes Care and Education Specialist will act as an "Ambassador" for ADCES and should be someone who is considered a role model by their peers and colleagues.

Research Award

Recognizes noteworthy translational scientific work that addresses the organization's vision and advances knowledge in the delivery of diabetes care and education. The research should include an ADCES-related research priority (diabetes technology, telehealth, implementation science, health equity, peer support, ADCES7 self-care behaviors, precision medicine, data science, innovative DSMES services, or community resources and policies). The recipient will receive conference registration and a $500 travel award. 

Eligibility: Research abstracts submitted for the annual conference can be considered for the award. The abstract's first author or the primary conference presenter is eligible for the award. The research should be submitted to and/or published in a peer-reviewed journal, with the applicant being the PI or Co-I of the study or demonstrating a significant contribution to the research design or analysis.


Rising Star Award

Recognizes a diabetes care and education specialist who has less than five years of diabetes care and education experience and has demonstrated leadership and commitment in their practice.

Donna Tomky Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice

This award will be given in memory of Donna Tomky, an ADCES Past President and Nurse Practitioner (NP), who advocated for the integration of self-management behaviors with clinical management, to a NP who continues to advance this integration through practice, health plan or health system innovation.

The Power of Our Impact Award

Recognizes a diabetes care and education specialist for their on-going dedication and service to persons with diabetes and the impact of diabetes self-management and clinical care that diabetes care and education specialists provide. The recipient of this award would be honored for their day-to-day commitment to clinical care to ensure the best outcomes for persons with diabetes. This award provides an opportunity for ADCES to recognize members in the field for their dedication to persons with diabetes who work every day to improve the quality of their patients' lives.

ADCES/Children with Diabetes - Friends for Life Fellowship Program

ADCES seeks to provide an opportunity to a diabetes care and education specialist, to learn about Type 1 diabetes from the perspective of the patient, family, and caregiver. Funding provided by the ADCES Foundation.
