Step therapy or “fail first” policies can adversely impact people with diabetes by limiting access to prescribed medication, delaying appropriate treatment and directly contributing to negative outcomes. Step therapy also undermines the unique treatment needs of individuals in order to reduce pharmacy costs and creates unnecessary barriers to individuals accessing prescribed medications in a timely manner.
